The Dow Jones breached the 22,000 mark for the first time boosted by better than expected results from Apple. The Index rose 0.24 per cent and logged a sixth successive record closing high.
The Nasdaq was constrained by significant profit taking, however, profit taking in other technology stocks, including Microsoft, Facebook and Alphabet held back the Nasdaq Composite, which ended flat, as the S&P 500 edged up 0.05 per cent.
Disappointing bank results (Société Générale and Commerzbank) undermined sentiment in Europe with most indices down 0.15 per cent to 0.6 per cent.
