Catalonian dispute escalates

Spain and Catalonia will be in focus this week following a large pro-unit march in Barcelona on Sunday. The Regional government indicated they wanted to negotiate with the Spanish government after having earlier threatened to declare independence this week. The Spanish government has maintained a hard line throughout the dispute.

Should Catalonia declare Independence it could further inflame the regions tensions, as Spain will either invoke article 155 of the Spanish constitution which will allow the Spanish government to take away Catalonia’s autonomy. This could also mean the imposition of martial law or emergency, and such a state will be hard to diffuse.
